About A.B. Cop (World)
Arcade Video game published 36 years ago:
A.B. Cop (c) 1990 Sega.
A.B. Cop is a futuristically-themed racing game from Sega in which the player takes on the role of a law enforcement officer - riding a heavily armoured and heavily armed hover-bike - who must chase down and destroy the perpetrators of an armed robbery before the time limit expires.
At the start of each level the player's bike is equipped with a limited number of 'Jumps' which, when utilized, allows the bike to temporarily take to the air; useful in avoiding the many vehicles - both enemy and benign - that litter the tracks. Also, if a jump is timed correctly it's possible to drop onto and attack enemy targets from above. Additional jumps can be earned by riding over the blue 'Jump' icons that occasionally appear on the track.
In addition to the jumps, pushing UP on the joystick gives the bike a short speed boost; necessary if the levels are to be completed within the tight time limits the game imposes. Unlike the jumps, the bike has an unlimited number of speed boosts.
A huge, heavily-armed guardian appears at the end of each stage - a first for the racing genre - which takes multiple hits to destroy.
A.B. Cop is hugely reminiscent of Taito's superb racing legend, "Chase HQ", released two years earlier.

A.B. Cop (World) — play guide
What A.B. Cop wants from you
A.B. Cop (Sega) is a futuristic bike chase racer: catch criminals across scaled roads with boost and contact tools under sit-down spectacle. Always-max boost into every hairpin is a self-KO. Racing line plus boost honesty decide whether the timer dies before the arrest. Treat ramming as a timed tool, not as a lifestyle—traffic and walls still end the credit while the attract mode sells speed.
First minutes in A.B. Cop
Learn the first chase’s braking points and when a boost is worth the risk. Stay on the target’s line instead of scenic crashes into roadside props. Continues fund route memory for each suspect; wreck tourism does not. Reset composure after a crash before the next boost stab so you do not chain failures into a timer death that looked busy.
Boost, chase timers, traffic
Chase or stage timers, boost meters, bike handling, and traffic define A.B. Cop. Position and contact efficiency over smash comedy. Continues teach which corners punish early boost. Traffic is both obstacle and timing puzzle—dive-bombs dump the clock as surely as missing the criminal’s line. Trust this ROM’s grip, not another Sega racer’s muscle memory.
Arrests with time left
Chase finishes and clean arrests score the run; crashes and timer fails tax continues. Continues are coins. Fewer panic boosts and fewer ignored peeks keep credits alive. Farming easy chases forever without reading denser suspect scripts still leaves A.B. Cop unread. Progress is Sega chrome that no longer forces crash loops mid-chase on later boards, not a pasted arrest.
Mistakes that burn A.B. Cop credits
Mash-boosting every straight, ignoring brake peeks, never waiting for a clean line, tunneling on scenery while a crash finishes you, and rage-continuing after crash streaks burn credits. Power-cycling mid-tilt without a plan burns another credit. Next credit: brake first, boost on plan—stop mash tourism for scenery and chase panic on later Sega boards.
After A.B. Cop
Chase H.Q. is Taito’s foundational chase teacher with nitro bumps and clearer timer lessons for many players. Super Hang-On and Hang-On are Sega bike line exams without the arrest fantasy—useful if boost discipline is your weak point. OutRun is Sega branching roads if you want tourism with checkpoints instead of suspects after A.B. Cop’s chase clocks feel honest. Finish one full careful chase before you chase vanity arrests again.
