Donkey Kong (c) 1982 Nintendo Co., Ltd.
As in the arcade game, Donkey Kong has kidnapped Pauline and carried her to the top of a construction site. Donkey Kong is throwing barrels. Mario has to dodge the barrels and climb his way to the top, flip the crane switch then use the crane to cut a wire on DK's girder. Game B requires more coordination, technique and timing. Highest possible score is 999. When the score reaches 300 one more Mario is restored. If there are no misses scores are doubled until the player get a miss.

Game & Watch: Donkey Kong — play guide
What G&W Donkey Kong wants from you
Game & Watch: Donkey Kong (Nintendo, 1982) adapts the arcade kidnap loop—Pauline atop, barrels and hazards—under G&W chrome. Your job is jump timing and barrel literacy—handheld packaging does not climb for you. Learn Game A before inventing Game B tourism. Treat G&W Donkey Kong as a 1982 handheld exam, not a free twin of the arcade cab or DK II.
First minutes in G&W Donkey Kong
First sessions: Game A, learn jump cadence and barrel timing on the LCD, and clear a real rescue without rage. Soft-continue after hits while LCD grammar warms. Early play teaches Donkey Kong honesty—survive clean climbs before inventing Game B tourism through every unread barrel pattern on the 1982 face.
Core systems in G&W Donkey Kong
Jump/climb verbs, barrels and hazards as wired, Game A/B, and G&W LCD quirks define the systems. Depth is reading jump windows under tiny-screen pressure on this 1982 dump. Kong chrome densifies distraction—keep eyes on barrels and ladders when the board densifies, not on Pauline art, in Donkey Kong.
Score, continues, and resources in G&W Donkey Kong
Clears and surviving rescues meter the session; hits tax continues. Continues while learning are fine. Extending means fewer panic jumps and fewer ignored barrels. Farming easy Game A forever without denser Game B still leaves Donkey Kong unread. Progress is rescues you can narrate mid-climb, not one lucky G&W screenshot.
Mistakes that burn credits in G&W Donkey Kong
Common G&W Donkey Kong fails: panic jumping; ignoring barrels; rage-restarting after one hit; pasting arcade DK muscle onto LCD timing; and confusing this title with Donkey Kong II dual-screen rules. Next credit: Game A only, timed jumps—stop panic-jump tourism on later Game & Watch Donkey Kong sessions.
Next steps after G&W Donkey Kong
When Donkey Kong rescues stay clean without constant hit empties, compare G&W Donkey Kong II deliberately for role/layout drift, then return with jump notes. Keep playing until panic-jump empties stop ending every session mid-climb. Cousin G&W Kong titles help as contrast after Game A feels automatic—not as escape from barrels you still mash. Clear one careful Game A rescue before you chase Game B again on Donkey Kong.
