About The Astyanax (EPROM version)
The Astyanax, known in Japan as The Lord of King, is a 1989 platform video game developed by Aicom and released for arcades by Jaleco. A port to the Nintendo Entertainment System, simply titled Astyanax, was released in 1989 in Japan and in Western regions in 1990, shortly after the arcade version, but is decidedly different from its arcade predecessor in terms of story. Hamster Corporation released the game as part of their Arcade Archives series for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in May 2021.

The Astyanax (EPROM version) — play guide
What The Astyanax wants from you
The Astyanax (Jaleco) is a side-scrolling sword platformer: clear stages, manage jumps and magic, and respect packs that punish greed into every nest. Charging every pack as if armor never fails empties lives mid-stage. Pick a route, strike with purpose, and treat The Astyanax as paced Jaleco scrolling—not mash tourism. The exam is still deep clears with lives left under The Astyanax paint.
First minutes in The Astyanax
Stage one: lock a jump and strike rhythm before inventing center-mash tourism through every pack. Strike when the path is honest; diving for vanity items mid-surround is expensive. Early stages are spacing labs under The Astyanax dressing. One clean stretch with composure left beats three surround deaths that looked flashy until a foe you ignored arrived.
Core systems in The Astyanax
Jumps, sword strikes, magic states, enemy scripts, and stage layouts define The Astyanax. Routes matter; center greed invites dual-side chips mid-pack. Later stages tighten with denser flanks; early mash habits fail harder under Jaleco scripts. Fantasy art sells spectacle; the stick still wants scroll discipline under denser peeks—never freeze mid-strike for vanity kills.
Score, continues, and resources in The Astyanax
Stages cleared with lives left beat mash tourism that empties resources mid-pack. Keep continuing while surround deaths repeat; cut them once jump peeks are automatic. Farming stage one for vanity charges teaches the wrong muscle. Extends follow score when awarded—claim them after jump honesty sticks under denser scripts, not after center greed that still dies mid-crowd.
Mistakes that burn credits in The Astyanax
Mash-slashing every pack, ignoring jump peeks, and leaping into pits for vanity burn The Astyanax credits. Players also dump magic on thin fodder then die on the first real boss pattern. Holding one combo fantasy while flanks arrive ends the life early. Tunneling on scenery while a fall finishes you is classic tilt. Next run: peek pits, slash calm, magic on dense packs—stop inventing flashier platform tours mid-fall.
Next steps after The Astyanax
Rastan densifies Taito peeks if The Astyanax still feels opaque—re-learn sword peeks under clearer classic rules, then return. Shadowland densifies Namco once route honesty sticks and you want denser fantasy peeks. Kid Niki densifies Irem when you prefer ninja peeks instead of The Astyanax. Stay in scrollers until mash religion stops donating every life into a pack mid-stage under denser scripts.
