About Chameleon

Snatch chicken eggs from their nests while traversing single-screen, platform-strewn levels as a long-tongued chameleon. Use the tongue mechanic to pull the character up to higher platforms or to escape contact with angry chickens. Players must also navigate around various bombs placed throughout the stages to successfully complete each level.

Chameleon — play guide

What Chameleon wants from you

Chameleon (1983) is a single-screen platform tongue-grabber: snatch eggs from nests with a long tongue while hopping platforms, and respect scripts that punish greed into every nest. Charging every egg as if foes never arrive empties lives mid-stage. Peek routes, tongue with purpose, and treat Chameleon as paced platform work—not mash tourism. The exam is still clears with lives left under Chameleon paint.

First minutes in Chameleon

Stage one: lock a tongue rhythm before inventing center-mash tourism through every nest. Grab when the path is honest; diving for vanity eggs mid-surround is expensive. Early stages are spacing labs under Chameleon dressing. One clean stretch with composure left beats three surround deaths that looked flashy until a foe you ignored arrived.

Core systems in Chameleon

Jumps, tongue reach, nest scripts, and platform layouts define Chameleon. Tongue timing is the system—mash blind and denser packs free-hit you mid-stage. Later stages tighten with denser flanks; early mash habits fail harder under arcade scripts. Lizard art sells charm; the stick still wants tongue discipline under denser peeks—never freeze mid-grab for vanity eggs on crowded ledges.

Score, continues, and resources in Chameleon

Stages cleared with lives left beat mash tourism that empties resources mid-pack. Keep continuing while surround deaths repeat; cut them once tongue peeks are automatic. Farming stage one for vanity egg grabs teaches the wrong muscle. Extends follow score when awarded—claim them after tongue honesty sticks under denser scripts, not after center greed that still dies mid-crowd.

Mistakes that burn credits in Chameleon

Ignoring maze peeks, rushing every corridor, and freezing mid-path for looks burn Chameleon credits. Players also chase one sparkle while a second hazard fills the only safe lane. Holding still for a perfect timing while threats stack ends the life early. Tunneling on score flash while enemies sandwich both sides is classic tilt. Next run: peek corridors, move when open, advance short—stop inventing flashier rushes mid-close.

Next steps after Chameleon

Frogger densifies Konami peeks if Chameleon still feels opaque—re-learn hop peeks under clearer classic rules, then return. Kangaroo densifies Atari once route honesty sticks and you want denser platform peeks. Ponpoko densifies when you prefer collect peeks instead of Chameleon. Stay in platforms until mash religion stops donating every life into a pack mid-stage under denser scripts.
