About Athena
SNK's 1986 title puts players in control of Athena, who begins combat using only unarmed strikes. As you navigate various worlds, you collect diverse weapons and armor to upgrade your defenses and offensive capabilities. This allows you to combat a wide range of enemies, from moving pears to massive golems and flying devils.

Athena — play guide
What Athena wants from you
Athena (SNK) is platform / fantasy: jump honesty, weapon peeks, and item timing decide stages more than mash leaps. Your job is reading pits before you commit—chasing every sparkle as if falls forgave empties lives fast. Continues buy jump literacy, not free clears. Athena rewards planned leaps and calm weapon swaps over vanity tourism mid-air. Clear stages with composure left; the chrome sells SNK fantasy, but the exam is platform timing you learn cold.
First minutes in Athena
On stage one, learn jump arcs and a safe weapon before inventing full-map tourism for every chest. Equip what the next room needs; carrying vanity gear through lace is expensive. Early stages are item labs under myth dressing. One clean stretch with composure left beats three under-equipped deaths that looked exploratory until a flyer arrived.
Core systems in Athena
Movement, jumps, weapons/items, stage routes, enemy scripts, and mid/boss patterns define Athena. Continues fund denser maps as later worlds tighten. Items are finite advantages—waste strong weapons on trash and you meet the boss soft. Bosses punish empty inventory after mid-stage vanity. Survival loadout gates every goddess fantasy the cabinet sells. Panic-tourism religions are still empty lives with extra sparkle under SNK density.
Score, continues, and resources in Athena
Stages cleared with lives and key items left beat chest tourism that empties resources before the next door. Continues while loadout composure builds; cut them once under-equipped deaths stop. Score waits until routes feel boring under pressure. Extends follow score when present—clean clears beat farming stage one forever for vanity chests you cannot keep after a panic fall.
Mistakes that burn credits in Athena
Chest greed through lace, entering bosses under-equipped, jump tourism without peeks, and ignoring flyer lanes are classic Athena mistakes. Peek first, equip second, collect third when calm. Goddess art will not refill a wasted weapon. Treating every room as mandatory sightseeing is how SNK collects the next credit on this platformer.
Next steps after Athena
Magician Lord is Neo Geo magic platform if you want denser peeks after Athena under later SNK hardware. Ghosts ’n Goblins is Capcom platform cruelty when you need meaner armor rules. Psycho Soldier keeps SNK Athena-universe company warm once Athena item honesty finally sticks and you want shooter-platform mix instead of pure adventure. Keep playing until panic-mash empties stop ending sessions mid-stage on later boards. Clear one full stage carefully before you chase vanity leaps again on denser platform cabinets.
