About Gauntlet (rev 14)

Dungeons filled with enemies serve as the battlefield for up to four players choosing between Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard, or Questor the Elf. Cooperative combat is balanced by competitive scavenging, as players must fight over limited food, treasure, and magic potions to sustain their health and progress through the maze.

Gauntlet (rev 14) — play guide

What Gauntlet wants from you

Gauntlet (Atari, 1985) is four-player dungeon crawl: Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf through mazes of generators, Death, and food under a health drain that taxes standing still. Your job is generator priority and food honesty so the party does not starve in a dead-end while arguing over a potion. Clear exits with keys and shared loot etiquette before the drain finishes what the monsters started. Atari co-op literacy under fantasy art—the announcer will mock you while the meter continues. Treat time as health; sightseeing is a tax.

First minutes in Gauntlet

Pick a class and learn shot versus melee range on the first floors before inventing hero routes through Death. Break generators before finishing every loose monster—new spawns from a living generator erase progress as you watch and laugh too late. Call food and potions in multiplayer; one player vacuuming every heal while others hit zero ends friendships and credits. Keep moving; the health drain does not pause for barrel tourism. Early floors are generator labs before deeper Death encounters punish the same mistakes harder.

Core systems in Gauntlet

Class kits, monster generators, food, potions, keys, exits, and Death define Gauntlet. Continues fund deeper floors; they do not refill a party that still fights over potions at full health. Walls and illusory paths waste time, and time is health under the drain. Co-op loot fights wipe more runs than hard rooms. Gauntlet II expands toys later; the generator gospel remains the entry fee for survival. Shot classes still need melee partners who do not block doorways while generators keep printing.

Score, continues, and resources in Gauntlet

Deeper floors with food left beat score tourism in empty rooms that still drain you dry while you farm vanity kills. Continues while generator priority becomes habit; cut them once loot fights stop wiping the party at exits. Extends follow score when present—move toward exits rather than farming forever under the drain while Death circles and the announcer finds new jokes at your expense.

Mistakes that burn credits in Gauntlet

Ignoring generators, standing still under the drain, potion greed, skipping exits to farm, and blocking partners in doorways are classic Gauntlet mistakes. Break spawners, share food, take the exit when the level is honest, and stop vacuuming every potion at full health. The announcer will not refill your health bar no matter how funny the line is. Hero tourism through Death for a chest is still a donation with narration.

Next steps after Gauntlet

Gauntlet II is Atari co-op maze sequel if Gauntlet’s food timer still feels opaque—re-learn potion peeks there first. Twin Cobra is unrelated shoot contrast when you need a break from maze stress. The Tower of Druaga is Namco once Gauntlet food honesty finally sticks and you want denser item literacy instead of Gauntlet halls. Food lasts longer once panic-potion dumps stop mid-corridor. Clear one careful floor before vanity potions return on denser Atari maze cabinets.
